Presentation at CFMTA Conference 2023
31 Mar, 2023
By drawing from my research in 2021 and relying on Coleridge-Taylor and Sorrow Song scholarship, I will discuss the ways in which the musical elements present in the Six Sorrow Songs, Op. 57 connect this cycle to the genre of Sorrow Songs through the use of repetitive structures, and use of modes, in addition to syncopations, weak beat accents, polyrhythm, cross-rhythms, declamatory sections, and drum calls. During this presentation, I would like to give an overview of the inter-genre borrowings and compositional elements Coleridge-Taylor uses in this composition with a focus on rhythmical elements.
